It isn`t always math and writing that are the only important subjects to be found in a homeschool. This does depend on the family, since there are some parents who tend to focus almost exclusively on this, however, my personal view of homeschooling is that it is a method of preparing our children for life.

What does your child need to know in order to go on to survive in the world? Math, social studies and language arts will certainly be a part of that, but what about other things like cooking, cleaning, managing a bank account, balancing a checkbook, or writing a resume? These are things that your children SHOULD see you doing on a regular basis and there is no reason not to include them in the process.

In our homeschool, my oldest is still only in kindergarten. However, he is already responsible for making snacks for himself and his brother at the end of his school-time. It`s nothing that complicated, cutting up bananas with a butter knife, spreading peanut butter on toast . . . but he`s learning to be responsible for others and himself. He`s learning how to prepare food and building valuable motor skills as he cuts and spreads and mixes. As your child grows, they can take on more responsibility.

Should you include these tasks in your school day? It might help make sure they get done! If your kids know that doing the laundry is what they are expected to do after Math and before Science, chances are it will be done!

Non-academic subjects are just as important as those that we test. Think about what your kids need to know when they leave home and start working on those skills now.
